After the October 7, 2023, attack in Israel, Igor Alterman felt a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility. These feelings drive him in his new role as CEO and President of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. Alterman, who began his tenure in February, is committed to supporting Israel and its people. "October 7 changed everything," he says. "Israel's security is a Jewish issue, not just an Israeli one." Under his leadership, the Federation will continue to mobilize resources and provide unwavering support. Known for his entrepreneurial approach, Alterman brings a fresh perspective to the federation, emphasizing the need to adapt to modern philanthropic trends. "Federated giving is evolving," he notes. "We must speak to those who will respond meaningfully and passionately." Combatting antisemitism is a top priority, and Alterman sees philanthropy and community engagement as key to addressing the challenges of today. The Federation’s unique partnership between lay leaders and professionals fosters a community-driven approach that Alterman calls the “secret sauce” for Jewish life in the area. Alterman also believes philanthropy is an investment in the Jewish future. “We must think bigger and act bolder,” he says. “The community makes it possible, and the Federation makes it happen.” As South Florida sees an influx of young families, Alterman is determined to create a vibrant, welcoming Jewish home. "Boca's no longer just 'G-d’s waiting room,'" he says, referencing the changing demographics of the region. He envisions the Federation as a central resource for families, from those seeking Jewish day schools to young professionals looking for development opportunities. With its 100-acre Boca Raton campus, home to schools, residential living, and more, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County is already a hub for the local Jewish community. Alterman aims to expand this reach, ensuring that Jewish families across the region can easily find resources and support. Born in the former Soviet Union, Alterman moved to South Florida in 2008 after working with Jewish nonprofit groups and earning degrees from Hebrew Union College. Prior to returning to South Florida, he led the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, where he focused on post-October 7 efforts to address rising antisemitism and build community resilience. Now back in South Florida with his wife Olga and their two children, Alterman is excited to develop new initiatives for young adults and create lasting connections within the Jewish community. "The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County will become the blueprint for the future of the Jewish people," he says. "I’m excited for what’s to come."
