Dispute Over Eruv Damage Sparks Calls for Police Patrols

The Miami Beach Eruv Council recently claimed that the eruv was deliberately vandalized, prompting a call to action. However, Surfside Police Sergeant Jay Matelis stated that an investigation found the damage was due to rusted metal clasps giving way, not intentional tampering.

Dov Coiffman of the Eruv Council disagreed, insisting the issue was not maintenance-related and had signs of interference. He noted that similar incidents in Miami Beach ceased once law enforcement got involved.

Coiffman has discussed the matter with Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner, who plans to contact Surfside Police. He believes increased police patrols would be the best deterrent.

The Miami Beach eruv spans 10 miles from South Beach to Bal Harbour, covering three miles in width.
