Growing Brush Fire in Southern Miami-Dade Disrupts Travel to and from Florida Keys

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL — A rapidly spreading brush fire in southern Miami-Dade, known as the 167 West Fire, is causing significant traffic disruptions for drivers traveling to and from the Florida Keys.

As of Friday morning, emergency officials report the following road closures due to fire activity and smoke:

  • Card Sound Road: Northbound lanes are open, but southbound lanes remain closed.
  • U.S. 1 (18-Mile Stretch): Southbound lanes are open, while northbound lanes are closed.

The brush fire, which has scorched a growing area of vegetation, has prompted a coordinated response from local and state firefighting teams. Thick smoke and active flames near major roadways have made travel hazardous, prompting temporary closures and detours.

Authorities are urging motorists to plan ahead, expect delays, and monitor updates as conditions may change throughout the day. They are also asking the public to avoid the area if possible to allow emergency crews to work safely and efficiently.

“Public safety is our top priority,” officials stated. “Please exercise caution, obey detour signs, and stay tuned to local news or emergency alerts for the latest updates.”

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. There have been no immediate reports of injuries or property damage, but firefighting efforts are expected to continue through the weekend.

Residents and travelers can check with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue for real-time traffic and emergency information.
