A Miami Beach man accused of breaking into a home appeared in court Friday morning to face charges of burglary of an occupied dwelling. Jose Santospena was caught on surveillance video early Thursday near a home on Pine Tree Drive, close to 43rd Street, in Mid-Beach. The homeowner, Babba Joshua Yesharim, armed himself with a firearm and confronted the intruder, prompting Santospena to flee. A massive police search followed, ending with his arrest. Speaking to 7News, Yesharim described how his dog barked and an alarm sounded, prompting him to check the cameras. Upon seeing the intruder, Yesharim grabbed his gun, gave his wife one, and confronted the prowler in his front courtyard while dressed in a bathrobe. “I pulled my gun on him, I told him, ‘Freeze. I’ve got a gun. I will shoot you,’” Yesharim recalled. The intruder ran, jumping over a neighbor’s wall. Yesharim’s house manager, armed with a shotgun, stood by to assist. Despite the intruder’s escape, police quickly responded, deploying K-9 units, SWAT teams, and even a helicopter. Santospena was found in a vacant lot nearby and arrested. The only items reported stolen were several yogurts from Yesharim’s refrigerator. Yesharim noted, “He could have taken—or tried to take—a lot more. I assume he wasn’t there just for yogurt.” Santospena, charged with occupied burglary, was denied bond and remains in custody at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He is set to appear in court again next week. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of home security and preparation. While the intruder took minimal items, the situation could have escalated, highlighting the value of homeowners knowing their self-defense rights and responding swiftly to protect themselves and their families.read the full story at https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/i-pulled-my-gun-on-him-video-shows-mid-beach-homeowner-confronting-burglar-suspect-caught-after-manhunt.
