A Miami Beach officer, Anyer Volquez-Ozuna, recounted a harrowing rescue mission on March 4, where he nearly lost his life while attempting to save two swimmers lost at sea near 16th Street. Battling strong rip currents and low visibility, Ozuna was pulled far from his team by a powerful southward current. As he struggled against the waves, he prayed for survival and to see his children again. After rescuing the distressed swimmers, first responders turned their attention to saving Ozuna. Using a rope and teamwork, they pulled him to safety. The exhausted officer was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he was cleared to go home. Grateful to be alive, Ozuna credited his training, faith, and colleagues for his survival, calling the experience a miracle.
