The first-ever South Florida Cholent Competition

The inaugural South Florida Cholent Competition exceeded expectations, drawing nearly 200 community members to celebrate culinary talent and unity. Organized by The South Florida Community Voice, the event quickly became a vibrant showcase of teamwork, tradition, and delicious cholent.

Twenty-five chefs from local synagogues gathered the night before at the Jewish Academy auditorium to prepare their cholents. The atmosphere was lively as participants exchanged techniques and shared ingredients, from seasoned experts to first-time cholent makers.

The event featured diverse and creative cholents, with some chefs experimenting with specialty ingredients like mineral water, corned beef, chicken wings, and even kneidlach (matzo balls). The judges—Zalmy Cohen, Sruley Myers, and Moses—evaluated each dish on taste, texture, creativity, and authenticity, while attendees also voted for their favorites. In a striking moment of divine providence, the judges’ and the crowd’s top choices aligned perfectly.

The competition’s winner was Rabbi Shmaya from the Jewish Center of Hollywood, whose cholent stood out for its depth of flavor, balanced seasoning, and perfect texture, thanks to their careful and dedicated preparation. Sponsors, including Rita’s, KC Market, and Optimum Bank, played a vital role in making the event a success, with Optimum Bank’s $5,000 grand prize adding excitement.

The event was a huge hit, with attendees praising the community spirit and lively debates over cholent techniques. Inspired by the success, organizers are planning to expand next year’s competition on a national scale, bringing together top cholent chefs from across the country.
